Jemophone is a musical toy for young children. The entire screen is an interactive musical surface with a colourful abstract background.

In Free Tone mode, Jemophone plays any tone (not just semitones) in the octave from middle C to tenor C, and the tones change as the child moves their fingers across the screen.

But there are lots of other ways to play, too! To change the settings, go to the Settings app, and find Jemophone in the list on the left. In the settings, you can lock the notes to the chromatic scale (semitones) or arab scale (quarter tones). You can also display fret lines for any one of 7 different scales.

To play the Jemophone (kind of) like a piano, select
Show Frets: Major
Lock To: Semitones

To play the Jemophone (kind of) like a zheng (Chinese string instrument), select
Show Frets: Major Pentatonic
Lock To: Nothing
and move your fingers in small, quick circles on the white frets.

To play the Jemophone (kind of) like a baglama (Turkish string instrument), select
Show Frets: Phrygian
Lock To: Quarter tones

If you use Multitasking Gestures, I advise you to turn them off (in Settings > General) before giving your iDevice to a young child. Many natural gestures (like grabbing or swiping at the screen) will close apps when Multitasking Gestures are enabled, which can be frustrating.
